Created by Leanne Wijnsma and Froukje Tan, the "Smell of Data" project explores the concept of dangerous data leaks. Like gas leaks, which were given a detectable smell in the late 30's, Wijnsma and Tan experimented with assigning potentially harmful data practices a scent to warn when you're leaking data.

The leaky corporation

Digital information is easy not only to store but also to leak. Companies must decide what they really need to keep secret, and how best to do so.

Answers for the project briefing

To what extent  is it designed or emergent?

The boundary of digital identity is growing, and it will take more in our
life in the future.

Is Identity defined and redifined through engagements with digital technology,
including our social and professional lives,
or does identity transcend is mediation?

So far, the identity has been defined continuously with the development of technology.
However, identity in the digital world will be change at the certain point.
It already started to combine online and offline, and AI also became a hot issue in this year

Is digital mediation changing ethics of identity, of our interactions, even our
sensory experience of the world?

+There are some people who generate fake identities to use illegally. For example, selling drugs, gun, sex slavery, morale and treat...
+On the other hand, fake identity also does great things- donation, help poor children secretly.
+Definately digital mediation changed our experience not only sensory but also
our way of thinking. No more interaction among people/ We can do many things in our room alone.

What does "digital mediation" tell us about the complex landscapes of
identity in the 21th century?

Is it all fake in the digital world?
Because when the server got to lose by natural disaster or war, all of the data will be disappear.
But in real life will remain until you die. Or it could continue, even though you die.
(SNS account, automatic e-mail etc)
I feel that the relationship between people become shallow as the boundary going grow up in Facebook or messenger app. Many of romantic/ sincere letters had disappeared, and simple emoticon and message were aroused in our daily life.
No need recognition among people face to face, they will easily use internet resources without guilty.
Cybercrime getting worse and variety that effects broadly in our society.

VALUE::
Awake people that their privacy/vital info/identity are leaking

PROBLEM::
Information leakage may occur serious crime.
But people think that it is not a big deal.

Why this exist? Is this a problem?
Providing good services/
Global companies/Government/Hackers are collecting personal data. It is useful for advertising product or services/selling products to make a lot of money.
Lot's of "terms of policy" ->Nobody will read it all

How to acknowledge?
Show how many data accumulated each day, moment, as you do something.
Show the possibility to connected to the serious crime.

2_Start from the problems

Start from the problems

1. Digital society makes people lonely?
Differences between reality and media
http://thechive.com/2017/06/09/instagram-versus-real-life-is-a-painful-dose-of-truth-27-photos/

2. Cultural urgency/emergency/discourse:
the sense of time, work speed, way to talk

3. Without interaction among people
EX) UBER: hassle-free taxi service, no need conversation
Convenient store in Asia: X asking people to buy something. X recommendation if not a customer asking.

4. Sensory Experience: problems with toooo connected digital world.
Especially, kids- they need to write, listen, make, feel more.

5. Real Connection- “how to make people feel they are connected in real”

6. Factory setting in future - like AI
